New DFG project explores the history of applied mathematics and mechanics in Germany from 1920 to 1970

In November 2025, the University of Wuppertal will launch the DFG project 'Transversale Wissenschaft: Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik in Deutschland im Spiegel ihrer disziplinären, organisatorischen und politischen Bezüge, 1920-1970' (Transversal Science: Applied Mathematics and Mechanics in Germany in the Mirror of their Disciplinary, Organisational, and Political References, 1920–1970), led by Dr. Jason Lemberg (Interdisciplinary Center for Science and Technology Studies (IZWT)). The project investigates the emergence, formation, and expansion of applied mathematics and mechanics as a new and dynamic field of knowledge in Germany since 1920. The empirical core of the historical study is the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) and the Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (ZAMM). The research proposal was prepared in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Moritz Epple (Frankfurt a.M.) and Prof. Dr. Volker Remmert (Wuppertal) and supported with funds from GAMM.

Welcome to the pages of the IZWT

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Science and Technology Studies (IZWT) conducts and supports research projects in the fields of history of science, philosophy of science and sociology of science. Cooperation between the three core disciplines of history, philosophy and sociology, as well as physics and mathematics, is focussed on the development and structure of science and technology. The centre cultivates interdisciplinary work between the humanities, natural sciences and technical sciences. By organizing colloquia, lecture series, workshops and project-related cooperation, the IZWT promotes dialogue between the different cultures of knowledge.
