Cosmic Ray Studies in the Early 20th Century

Cosmic ray studies in the early 20th century paved the way for what was to become particle physics and laid the basis for modern astroparticle physics. However, the history of its genesis and rise has not been explored. The thesis aims at an comprehensive account of the research environment of the period between the starting point in 1911/12 – the “ground-breaking” articles by Victor F. Hess - and the successes of elementary particle physics of the 1930s. Different aspects will be taken into consideration, from the very contents, to personnel, to institutions. The project will also bear in mind the prehistory of this field of study and will give a short recollection of its relation to modern (astroparticle-) physics. Moreover, this approach may open new perspective on problems of philosophy of science that have been discussed for decades, using particle physics as an example.
