Lecture "THE HISTORICAL ELBERFELD TABLE PLANETARY FROM 1828"
History, astronomical decoding and planned return of the exhibit on 7 October at 18:30 in the city library (Koplingstraße 8) Admission free
"Surely there is no science that could provide the mind with a more worthy occupation and at the same time fill it with a deeper feeling for the power and wisdom of the Creator than astronomy."
With these words, the Elberfeld carpenter Heinrich Aeuer introduces his writing on the table planetarium he completed in 1828, which he then sold to the newly founded Realgymnasium Elberfeld in 1830 and maintained and cared for there for a long time. In 1907, at Carl Duisberg's request, it was loaned to the Deutsches Museum in Munich, where it could be admired in the current exhibition of historical planetariums until 1992. Since then it has been in the catacombs of the museum, where it was rediscovered by the Astro-AG of the immediate successor school, the Carl-Fuhlrott-Gymnasium.
The lecture will document the history, technology and condition of this technically and visually unique table-top planetarium - including an explanation of all astronomical functions and the planned return of the exhibit.
