Lecture series

The lecture series takes place every summer semester in addition to the IZWT colloquium and is always dedicated to a specific topic of public interest. In addition to external guests, scientists from the University of Wuppertal also give lectures. The lecture series takes place in the city centre of Elberfeld and is aimed not only at an academic audience but also at interested members of the public.

Summer term 2022: History and future of the university. 50 years of the university of Wuppertal

The founding of the university of Wuppertal in 1972 was part of a reform of the North Rhine-Westphalian higher education system. We are taking its 50th anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on the reform debates and educational reforms of the 1960s and 1970s, especially the impact of Johannes Rau. As part of the lecture series, we want to discuss how reform universities celebrate themselves and allow contemporary witnesses from the founding period of the University of Wuppertal to have their say. We will also trace the development of the University of Wuppertal in the context of all NRW universities over the last five decades. However, the lecture series will not only focus on the history of the university, but also on the future of the university and the associated political and social challenges.
