Lecture series

The lecture series takes place every summer semester in addition to the IZWT colloquium and is always dedicated to a specific topic of public interest. In addition to external guests, scientists from the University of Wuppertal also give lectures. The lecture series takes place in the city centre of Elberfeld and is aimed not only at an academic audience but also at interested members of the public.

Summer term: Academic freedom under threat?

Without doubt, academic freedom is a fundamental right under the rule of law and essential for the functioning of science. However, for some years now, increasing concerns have been raised that academic freedom is under threat in Germany and internationally.

This lecture series explores these concerns in five presentations, addressing the following questions: What exactly is academic freedom, particularly in contrast to freedom of expression? Why is it so important? Does it have limits, and if so, where should these limits lie? What empirical evidence suggests that it is indeed under threat?
